PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Austin Contemporary Sound Workshop is a 6-day music intensive for high school students that teaches a wide-variety of skills through classes and performance opportunities, and will take place at Austin’s classical radio station, KMFA 89.5. Students will unlearn what their ideas about music are, and become better-informed of the realities in the music industry through thoughtfully guided discussions. The program introduces new concepts and ideas, and contextualizes the programmed repertoire. During the workshop, students will learn, coach and perform contemporary repertoire, hone their ability to improvise, and participate in classes in music technology, entrepreneurship, and production. The 6-day program concludes in a culminating set of performances that showcases their newly acquired skills to the Austin community and beyond.

OUR MISSION

To provide students with a unique summer music camp experience that teaches the pragmatic, relevant, and heuristic skills necessary to navigate various career paths in the modern performing arts industry, while learning, preparing, and performing repertoire from the 20th and 21st centuries.

“Those in the performing arts today need to develop more skills than just performing if they want to have a sustainable career.”

— Kenken Gorder, ACSW Program Director
